A Calm Soul + This Sunday
Good morning Immanuel. We don’t have to bear the weight of the world today.
“I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me. (Psalm 131:2)”
We do not expect infants to wait calmly for their milk. And we expect no more from infants in Christ. But for those who are maturing in Christ, we expect more than infant panic.
King David, who wrote these tender words, was a man with tremendous responsibilities. His reign was marked by trouble and war. He was also a man of tremendous strength and wisdom, in whom the Spirit of God dwelled powerfully. How striking, then, to hear this great warrior king speak of his soul in relation to God as that of a child just weaned from its mother’s breast. Here is a source of power the world cannot receive: humble trust in God. We are as strong in the Lord as we are dependent upon Him. And the sign of our maturity is the calm we feel under His protection.
Dear Immanuel family, we don’t have to bear the weight of the world today. By God’s grace, we are free to focus on the work in front of us and the people around us and leave the running of the Universe to Him who loves us. We can say to our souls today, “Soul, be calm. The Ruler of heaven and earth looks after you with mothering affection. Nothing can trouble you that cannot trouble Him.”
