A Freeing Truth + This Sunday at Immanuel
There are no "little people" in the hands of a great God.
“Do not despise the day of small things” (Zechariah 4:10).
One of the most freeing lessons I’ve learned came from the writings of Francis Schaeffer. He once wrote, “With God there are no little people and no little places.” I’ve come back to that line more times than I can count.
Schaeffer told the story of Moses at the burning bush. Moses stood there, overwhelmed, uncertain, holding nothing but a shepherd’s staff. God asked him a simple question: “What is that in your hand?” It was just a stick. But when surrendered to the Lord, it became the rod that would part the Red Sea. Schaeffer saw that as a picture of how God works with us. He said, “The rod of Moses had to become the rod of God. So that which is me must become the ‘me of God’.” That truth still hits home.
It reminds me that we don’t need a platform to be useful. We don’t need to be noticed to be faithful. In the hands of Jesus, even the smallest acts become sacred. This truth frees us from the futility of chasing greatness and invites us to a life of surrender. We can trust that God sees all and knows all. We can rest in the truth that Jesus delights to take what feels weak or hidden or ordinary and use it for eternal things (1 Corinthians 1:26).
So whatever’s in your hand today, whatever role you play, whatever task you face, or however small you feel yourself to be, offer that up to Jesus. When Jesus holds your life, nothing is little—not you, not this day, not your work, or your witness, because there are no little people in the hands of a great God.
