A Glorious Promise
When God saves us, He doesn’t merely spruce up our morals.
“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).
Jesus Paid it All
Lord, now indeed I find
Thy pow’r and Thine alone,
Can change the leper’s spots
And melt the heart of stone.
Every year, over 3,700 heart transplants are completed in the United States. More than 50,000 people have received new hearts since the first successful one was performed in 1968. That is amazing–more than 50,000 people given a chance at extended life through medical skill and technology.
Somehow, though, we easily overlook the miraculous, mind-blowing scale on which God gives new hearts. Every one of us who is a follower of Jesus has been given a new heart. When God saves us, He doesn’t merely spruce up our morals or repair some damage to our souls. He replaced our hearts of stone with a heart of flesh, alive to Christ and dead to sin. (Eph. 2:4-5)
People who have had a heart transplant often speak of the new perspective they have on life, how they live with greater joy and purpose because of this new lease on life. Friends, how much more free can we be to live with joy and purpose? We have been released from the bonds of death and set free in Christ. We have not received a new lease on our old life but rather the beginning of a new life altogether and the assurance of eternal life.
