Be Thou My Vision
Jesus is the object of our vision in everything, everywhere we look, drawing us to worship.
“…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith…” (Hebrews 12:2)
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me save that thou art.
Thou my best thought by day and by night;
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.
Many of us have sung this beautiful Irish hymn hundreds of times. It is a comfort and a sweet prayer. But have we considered what it means for Jesus to be our vision?
When you visit the Rocky Mountains or the Atlantic coast, your vision is filled with scenes of wonder and majesty. Everywhere you look you see mountains or oceans or brilliant sky. So it is when Jesus is our vision. He fills our minds and hearts. He dominates our thoughts. We can’t take our eyes off him. We gaze at Jesus. We meditate on Jesus. We wonder at Jesus. And we never tire of Him because we constantly see aspects of his work, beauty, goodness, and love that we’d never noticed.
But all this gazing doesn’t make us “too heavenly-minded to be any earthly good.” We do not lose ourselves in a pleasant haze of spirituality. Because when Jesus is our vision, we see everything else through him. He is our perspective, the light by which we walk, the corrective lens that brings truth and beauty into focus, and the wisdom by which we think and live. When Jesus is our vision we navigate real life–work, school, relationships–in his way.
Jesus is the object of our vision in everything, everywhere we look, drawing us to worship. And Jesus is our means of vision so that we can live every part of life in a manner that honors him.
