Counted Righteous
Good morning Immanuel! Our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus Christ, our righteousness!
“And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:6).
When God told Abram to pack up his family and leave the land of his ancestors, he did. When God told Abram to sacrifice the darling son of his old age, he tried—until God intervened. And yet we are told here that the reason God counted Abram as righteous is not because of anything Abram did for God, but because of what Abram believed God would do for him. When the Lord held out a promise to Abram, Abram put his full weight down on it. He believed the promises of the Lord. And as a result, the Lord credited Abram’s account with righteousness.
The same promises are ours today. Through the cross of Jesus Christ, “the offspring of Abraham,” the righteousness of God is credited to all who believe. He is the only One from whom we cannot expect too much.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
