“It is good to give thanks to the LORD, to sing praises to your name, O Most High; to declare your steadfast love in the morning, and your faithfulness by night” (Psalm 92:1–2).
If you are reading this, it is safe to say you woke up this morning. I don’t suppose, though, that in the bleary pre-caffeinated state of mind in which one usually starts the day, you paused to consider why you woke up? Of course not. Waking up is one of the most normal, most necessary, most mundane, most overlookable things we do.
But waking up is a miracle of sorts. Every night we lie down and enter into a helpless, dead-to-the-world state. We are buried in sleep. And each morning, through the blare of an alarm clock or the singing of birds or the flying elbow of a small child, we arise. Alive again.
To sleep is to put ourselves completely in the hands of our Father God, who “never slumbers or sleeps” (Psalm 121:4). And to wake up is a mini-resurrection; a reminder of the victory of Jesus and a foreshadowing of the glories to come. God has built this into the rhythm of our lives as a gift–a reminder to depend on him, to look to Jesus, and to worship daily at this small miracle.
