“Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54b-55).
Death is the “last enemy,” the looming dread, the final say for every mortal being.(1 Cor. 15:26) Death has been anthropomorphized into a faceless reaper coming for every soul on an unknown appointed day. We euphemize death to soften it: “He passed on” or “She’s no longer with us.” We deny it because we fear it.
But Christian, what do you have to fear? What power has death over us? It has the power to make us grieve, but we do not grieve as those who have no hope. (1 Thess. 4:13) It has the power to inflict pain, but we know that one day Jesus “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore.” (Rev. 21:4)
We know this because Jesus lives that death may die. He surrendered to death and delivered himself from it on his own terms. He broke death’s power of dread and of condemnation for all who believe in him. By rising from the dead Jesus struck death a mortal blow. It still grasps and gathers and haunts, but death has no power to hold you or me. It has no power to separate us from the love of God in this life or the next. (Rom. 8:38-39) For we are in Christ, the resurrected one, the victorious one, and our eternal life is sure.
who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.
