Everyday Catechism (+ Spring Break)
We end each of our sermons in our Genesis series with a brief counter-catechism. Here is a summary from our sermons in February.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).
Every single day, our hearts and minds are quietly shaped by habits of thought, repeated practices, and subtle influences. We’re all formed by something—even if we don’t realize it. The real question is never if we’re being shaped, but rather who or what is shaping us. Whether it’s social media, entertainment, or simply the rhythm of daily routines, our affections and perspectives are constantly being formed. We are always being catechized.
Because of this, we must actively recognize and resist the subtle ways our culture attempts to disciple us away from Jesus—this is what we call counter-catechesis. By intentionally embracing biblical truth, we inoculate ourselves against the constant counter-formation around us, enabling us to see ourselves and the world more clearly through the lens of the gospel.
We end each of our sermons in our Genesis series with a brief counter-catechism. Here is a roll-up from our sermons in February:
2/2: Gen. 1:1
Pastor: We have often heard it said that the universe came from nothing and has no meaning.
All: But the Bible tells us that God is at the center of reality and that he was pleased to make all that there is.
2/9: Gen. 1:2
Pastor: The world says, “All possibility resides within you. Your life is what you make it.”
All: The Bible says, "We are chaos within, and need the renewal and beauty that only the Spirit of Jesus can bring.”
2/16: Gen. 1:3-31
Pastor: The world today tells us that God is distant and aloof, if he exists at all.
All: The Bible shows us that God wants a personal relationship with us – so much so that the Word became flesh and suffered in our place on the cross to bring us
back to God.
2/23: Gen. 1:3-25
Pastor: We are often told that this world either doesn't matter, or that it's all we have to live for.
All: But the Bible says, "Everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving."
May the Lord shape our hearts and strengthen our hope today!
