God's Precious Word
The Word of God is life-giving, enduring, and sweet, and we ask for hearts that treasure it accordingly.
“The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb” (Psalm 19:8-10).
Have you ever been to the Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC? One of their featured exhibits is the Hope Diamond, a 45-carat blue diamond with a long and storied history. It is valued at over $250 million. I have had a chance to see it a handful of times, and every time my reaction is, “meh.” Here is a beautiful, rare, immensely valuable jewel, and I glance at it for about fifteen seconds before moving on. That is also about how I treat the Bible sometimes. I don’t come to it with the anticipation and awe of engaging something precious.
Look at some of the descriptions of God’s words in these verses: rejoicing, enlightening, enduring, desirable, invaluable, sweet. They are the most precious thing. They give life. They are not just good but sweet. And they are ours! God gave us these invaluable words. We don’t need to gain admission or wait in line. We can flop down in a recliner or sit down at a kitchen table and have them. If the Hope Diamond is worth a fortune, then the Bible is worth everything. When we come to it, we aren’t simply looking at it, we are building our lives on it.
Thank you for this fresh perspective this morning. Admittedly I have run by God’s precious Word in my own whirlwind of life too often, but His Word is Life and breath..It is what holds us together in the stuff of life. Oh that I would treasure the sweetness of it even more. How grateful I am when the Holy Spirit speaks the Word back into our hearts and minds. Truly a lamp unto our feet and alight unto our path.
Grateful,
Miki K.
