Good News
Good morning, Immanuel. The gospel is God’s total provision for our past, present, and future in Christ.
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain” (1 Cor. 15:1-2).
When Paul sought to reorient the Corinthian church to its true center of gravity, he emphasized the gospel’s centrality to the entire Christian life:
The gospel was preached - It has been said that the gospel is not good advice but good news. It is an announcement of good news for bad people through the finished work of Jesus.
The gospel is received - It is not the good news of what I do to be saved but the liberating message of what God has done in Christ, to be received with the empty hands of faith.
The gospel is how we stand—it is not just for the outsider but for the insider. When I ask the question, ‘How does God really feel about me right now?’ The gospel has an answer: There is, therefore, now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus!
The gospel is how we are being saved—we never graduate from it. We were saved in the past tense and stand by the gospel, and it is by the gospel that God will bring the fullness of eternal life to completion in us. The gospel is God’s total provision for our past, present, and future in Christ.
The gospel is truly our center of gravity. Let's remind each other daily of good news for bad people through the finished work of Christ!
