Good News For Tired People
Good morning Immanuel. Christ is able to do more for us in our sleep than we could ever accomplish by our own strength.
“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me” (Psalm 3:4).
The average person spends roughly one-third of their life sleeping. That's equivalent to about 26 years in bed, face down in a pile of books, or on a rocking chair with an infant in hand. Sleep is a significant part of our lives. Sleep is also featured in the Bible's story, being mentioned more than 90 times. A few notable examples include Adam’s deep sleep, where God made Eve from his rib; Abraham’s deep sleep, where God made a covenant; Jesus sleeping on the boat in the midst of a storm; and the disciples falling asleep as Jesus agonized in the garden of Gethsemane.
Here in Psalm 34, we have a reference to sleep that may encourage the weary. David knew what it was like to be weary. He often experienced weariness from war and constant adversity (Psalm 34:1). David recounts a moment when he reached his physical limit. His foes were against him, and he did his best to watch his back, but eventually, sleep overcame him. We all have limits. But when David reached the limits of his own resources, he discovered the Lord's endless resources, graciously sustaining him! The kingdom of God didn't collapse while David slept, but God proved Himself to be the limitless One who was able to sustain a man who reached his limits. So, David reports that he slept and woke again because the Lord sustained him.
The same is true for us today. When we face our limits and get tired, we can rest in the Lord, knowing that Christ is able to do more for us in our sleep than we could ever accomplish by our own strength. That’s good news for tired people.
