“He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30).
We are free to step off the stage.
In the kingdom of God, the way up is down. The spotlight doesn’t belong to us. We’re not the main act. Like John the Baptist, we play the background so Jesus can take center stage. “He must increase, but I must decrease.” That’s the way of humility—and the path to real joy.
In the world, greatness means climbing higher. But in the kingdom of God, greatness looks like stooping low and making much of Jesus, not ourselves. And the beauty is, we don’t lose ourselves in the process—we find freedom. We don’t have to perform, and we don’t have to be impressive.
That is the freedom the gospel gives us. Our smallness isn’t a liability—it’s a liberty. In Christ, the burden of self-glory is lifted, and we’re invited into the glad relief of self-forgetfulness. We don’t have to fear the backseat when Jesus is driving the story. The pressure’s off. The weight of significance no longer rests on our shoulders.
We can step off the stage and be known, loved, and forgiven.
