His Mercy For Those Who Fear Him + Midweek Update
Good morning Immanuel. In Christ, the glory of God does not condemn but restores!
"And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation." (Luke 1:50)
What comes to mind when you think of the fear of God? Often we associate it with every reason to run away and hide. In the Bible, when people encountered God's holiness, they trembled in His presence. When Isaiah saw the glory of the Lord, he lamented his spiritual condition. When Jesus revealed his glory to the disciples, Peter was afraid and wanted Jesus to depart his presence. Those responses make sense because fear and condemnation go together. But here in Luke 1, it is not fear and condemnation that pair up; it is fear and mercy! His mercy is for those who fear him. His mercy is for us. Mary rejoices because the holiness of God includes his eagerness to redeem His people. She saw the deeper reality that God’s glory was not coming down to terrify us but to bless and restore us! His mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.
