“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil…” (Hebrews 2:14)
Jesus didn’t just die for us—He died as one of us, fully clothed in our humanity. He stepped into the grave we dug with our own hands and shattered the bars from the inside out. His death was unlike any other. It was no retreat, no concession. It was a rescue mission—a direct assault on our greatest enemy: the devil.
The devil once held the power of death—the power to accuse us of our sin, knowing full well that “the wages of sin is death.” But the death of Jesus disarmed those accusations. Because of Him, we are no longer sinners accused and condemned—we are sinners acquitted and justified. No longer can our accuser bring any charge against God’s elect—because Christ has died!
Our sins are many, but they no longer stand in judgment against us, because Jesus died for us and as one of us. Because of His death, fear loses its grip. Guilt loses its voice. The grave loses its sting.
The hymn gets it right:
Death was once my great opponent,
Fear once had a hold on me.
But the Son who died to save us,
Rose that we would be free indeed.
Today we are invited to live unafraid—not because we’re strong, but because Christ has won.
