Jesus: The Lord of History
Good morning, Immanuel. If you are on the right side of Jesus, you will never be on the wrong side of history because history is going his way.
“When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last…” (Revelation 1:17).
Jesus is the Lord of history because Jesus says, "Fear not, I am the first and the last." Jesus is the beginning and the end; he's the Alpha and the Omega. History is in his hands. He's Lord over history. He sees one end of it to the other, and we need to know that if we're to be people who don't fear. Christians are sometimes accused of being on the wrong side of history. That is an argument we have been hearing now for several years, I sometimes get into conversations with friends of mine who aren't followers of Jesus, and we'll be talking about some issue where Christians see things differently to the culture around us. They'll say, "Come on, it's 2024," as if announcing the year is a moral argument. But it can be a powerful accusation: "You guys are not on the right side of history. Things are going in a direction and you guys, you're not on the train, you need to get on board." We especially hear it in Pride Month.
So when people say to me, "You know, you're on the wrong side of history," one of my first responses is to say, "Well, whose history?" If you mean white American history, I think the rest of the world might have something to say about that. But more importantly, if Jesus is the first and the last, if Jesus is the beginning and the end, then if you are on the right side of Jesus, you will never be on the wrong side of history because history is going his way.
