Jesus the Servant + Tonight at Immanuel!
Good morning Immanuel. The humility of Jesus is our salvation!
"For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45)”
When people want to know more about you, one of the first things they often ask is, "What do you do?" My past life as Christian Hip-Hop Producer sounded like an impressive title, but all I really did was sit around in my bedroom drinking way too many caffeinated beverages while tinkering around with my computer until 3 am, hoping that something would eventually stick. Not always so fun, but at least my title sounded cool.
While titles can quickly get to our heads, they are not unimportant. Titles help clarify our work and can highlight the dignity of the person behind the work. This is probably why we often avoid humble titles. We don’t naturally choose to be labeled something lowly. And yet, this is precisely what attracts us to Jesus! He is the most dignified person ever to walk this earth, and yet He gladly embraced the lowly title and role of “Servant.” Even more, it was his glory to take on this title and role. How else would the eternal Son of God save us except for his willingness to embrace the humility of servanthood? As Andrew Murray, the 19th-century Dutch missionary to South Africa, once said, “His humility became our salvation.”
We worship Jesus precisely because he humbled himself to the point of death on the cross for us (Phil. 2:6-9). In Christ, we have the ultimate servant for our good and God’s glory. Praise be to Christ!
