Man of Sorrows
When we face sorrow, we can know that Jesus has walked that path before us and walks it with us now.
"He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3).

Isaiah’s description of Jesus as “a man of sorrows” points to the profound truth of His shared humanity. Though He was fully God, Jesus walked this earth enduring sorrow and grief, just like us. His divinity did not shield Him from the pain of rejection, the weight of betrayal, or the heaviness of loss. The Lord of Glory endured the full weight of these trials and was “acquainted with grief.”
That blessed description of Jesus means that we are never without one who is able to suffer with us. Jesus is not distant or far off from our struggles. When we face sorrow, we can know that Jesus has walked that path before us and walks it with us now. He knows what it is to be rejected, to feel abandoned, to experience grief beyond words. And in that, He is near to us—God—made, touchable, approachable, and even vulnerable.
As we reflect on this, we can draw strength from the fact that our Savior isn’t removed from our pain. When we feel alone in our suffering, we can remember that Jesus, the man of sorrows, is close to us. He bore the greatest of our grief at the cross so that in Him, we can have comfort in this life and hope for the life to come.
