“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).
Guilt is not a figment of our imagination. It’s real. We were rebels against a holy God, willingly trading His glory for our own way. And for that, we stood condemned—rightly so. With the bang of a gavel, the courtroom of heaven rendered a just verdict: guilty. No excuses. No hung jury. But thanks be to God that verdict doesn’t get the final word.
In Christ, the gavel that once fell in condemnation now rings out with grace. There is therefore now no condemnation. Take note of the word now. It marks the turning point in the story. Now—because of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection—those who were once guilty are now declared righteous through faith in Him. And not because our guilt evaporated into thin air, but because it was nailed to the cross.
Whenever the paralyzing feeling of guilt creeps in, or the fiery darts of the enemy assault us, Romans 8:1 gives us the right to talk back.
To our feelings: You don’t define me—Christ does.
To our failures: You don’t undo the cross.
To our accuser: There is no condemnation—now, and forever.
Guilt is not the final word— but the grace of God in Christ is!
Thanks be to God!
