Our Anchor + Tonight at Immanuel!
Good morning Immanuel. God's hold on us is always stronger than our hold on Him.
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 6:19-20).
About ten years ago, a family member took me on a boat trip on a river in Washington state. The boat was small and easily affected by the current. After a few hours of sputtering around and not catching anything, we decided to call it quits and make our way back to the banks. As we neared the banks, I figured we were close enough for me to jump out and make it to shore, but I overestimated my ability to jump and underestimated the boat's tendency to drift. I came to this realization mid-air as the force of my jump pushed the boat further away, and I plunged into neck-deep water. It would have been nice to have an anchor.
The human heart is a bit like that boat. We are prone to drift, overestimating our strength and underestimating the spiritual forces waging war against us. But the good news of our life in Christ is that we have an anchor for the soul—a sure and steadfast anchor. Our willpower and motivation may falter, but just as a strong anchor keeps a storm-tossed boat from drifting away, a sure and steadfast anchor keeps the storm-tossed soul from drifting away. Our soul's anchor is greater than any earthly anchor. All other anchors sink downward. But our heavenly anchor rises to heaven itself, even to the presence of God, where Christ has gone on our behalf! There is no place more secure than the love of God in Christ, our risen Savior. At the Father's right hand reside mercy, pardon, security, and acceptance in Christ. Our hope is alive, and He will hold this storm-tossed soul fast!
