Power & Compassion
Good morning, Immanuel. Christmas is a great time to consider the Lord of power and compassion!
“And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him” (Matthew 20:34).
Two wonderful qualities of Jesus are on display here: His power and His compassion.
Jesus is powerful. We see that here by how He wields creative power to give sight to the blind. Every believer is a living testimony to the sight-giving power of Jesus. In the words of John Newton’s 'Amazing Grace,' “I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see.” If we follow Jesus at all, it is because the eyes of our hearts have been awakened to see Him as desirable. Praise be to God for the sight-giving power of Jesus!
Not only is the power of Jesus evident in this verse, but also His compassion. Great power can often frighten us because those who possess it may wield it to our destruction. But here, we see the Lord of power freely wielding it “in pity” for the sake of the powerless. The Lord has compassion for us, and in love, His power mercifully moves out towards us. In Jesus, God’s power and compassion gloriously come together for our good. As Christmas day draws near, let us consider the Lord of power and compassion!
