Surely He Has Borne Our Griefs
"And he began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, 'My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch'" (Mark 14:33-34).
“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted” (Isaiah 53:4).
Jesus’s sorrow in Gethsemane was deeper than any sorrow we’ve tasted. The weight He bore went beyond betrayal, loneliness, or fear of death. As He faced the cross, He saw on the horizon the cup of God’s wrath—the punishment for our sins—that He was about to drink. Unlike others who faced death, Jesus alone understood the full gravity of what was ahead. The physical suffering was one part, but the true agony was facing the wrath of a holy God in our place.
At Gethsemane, Jesus was “greatly distressed,” and Mark described His sorrow as nearly overwhelming. He felt this sorrow not only because of the suffering He would endure but because He knew the cost of taking on our sin. Yet He chose to bear this weight out of love for us. We saw here the depth of His compassion, as He took on the pain of separation from the Father—a pain greater than anything we can imagine.
Jesus’s sorrow and willingness to carry this burden reveal His profound love for us. When we feel our own sorrow, we can look to Him, knowing He understands our suffering fully and has carried our deepest burdens. He is near to us— even united to us — and he knows grief firsthand much more than we do ourselves.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.
