The Assurance of Our Inheritance in Christ
Good morning Immanuel. Jesus intended a rich inheritance of provision for our deepest needs and did it by offering himself for us.
“He chose our heritage for us, the pride of Jacob whom he loves.” (Psalm 47:4)
“In him we have obtained an inheritance…” (Ephesians 1:11)
Knowing intellectually that Jesus orchestrates the exact details of our lives, from our current addresses to the specific points in history in which we live, is one thing. Living like that’s true in our day-to-day lives is another. Thankfully, he provides reminders of his intention in our lives through his word, and Psalm 47:4 serves as a striking reminder of his meticulous care and provision.
In the CSB and NIV Bible translations, the word “heritage” is recorded as “inheritance,” giving us more insight into the full meaning of Psalm 47:4.
We didn’t choose what we wanted to receive from God—he chose for us. And we can take great comfort in that because he chooses good things for his children. What a relief! I can’t trust my own heart to choose the best for me. Thank God for God, the ultimate trustworthy provider!
But these good gifts are more than physical, earthly blessings. Ephesians 1:11 says we have obtained an inheritance in Christ. The blessings we receive aren’t only exterior to us; they’re located in true spiritual reality—in Christ. Our inheritance is our position—we are grafted into the life of Christ through his blood.
As he renews our minds daily, we can rest assured that Christ chose our heritage, our inheritance, for us. Who better to choose? He intended a rich inheritance of provision for our deepest needs and did it by offering himself for us. We can find our ultimate good in him alone—and he offers it freely, joyfully, and openly. May he settle this truth down deep!
