The Best Seats In The House
Good morning Immanuel. We have the best seats in the house, and we didn’t pay a dime for them!
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus…” (Ephesians 2:4-6).
It’s a common experience for many of us to wake up feeling far from God, and like we must climb a ladder to get back into contact with him. And it’s a massive relief to thumb through the entire Bible and find that God, in his kindness, simply has not, does not, and will not treat his beloved children like that. Paul, in Ephesians 2, reminds us that because of God’s rich mercy and great love, we have been raised with Christ and seated with him in the heavenly places.
Richard Lovelace, in Dynamics of Spiritual Life, speaks to our position before God this morning, “Ladders are always intimidating, and it is my suspicion that Christians should always assume that they start each day at the top of the ladder in contact with God and renew this assumption whenever they appear to have slipped a rung.“
This morning, Jesus is not one floor above you, at the top of a tall, rickety ladder, shouting down instructions and looking at his watch. If you’ve fallen into his arms with the empty hands of faith, then He has raised you and seated you with Him. The God of the universe has come down, rescued you from sin and death, and lifted you. He is not far from you but with you, and you are with Him. This morning, we have the best seats in the house, and we didn’t pay a dime for them.
