The Daily + Midweek Update!
Good morning, Immanuel. Catch up on the midweek update and be encouraged with this reminder from Pastor Vince.
“The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup; you hold my lot. The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance” (Psalm 16:4-6).
Anything besides God on the throne of our hearts only leads to exponential sorrow. But in verses five and six, we see the photo negative of idolatry. We see total contentment in God alone. David describes his contentment in God with words like “portion” and “lot.” He’s using land language. Land had a different significance 3000 years ago. It was both your livelihood and your survival.
The language here is nearly identical to the book of Numbers when God tells the Levites that they won’t be getting a portion of the promised land like the other eleven tribes of Israel. Instead, He says to them, “I am your portion and your inheritance." David is saying that God couldn't have drawn up the property lines any better. “God, I have you for my allotted portion, and that's just how I want it.” That’s David’s mindset. My portion, my lot, my inheritance is God Himself. David trusts God for everything, and so can we.
