The Daily + Rebecca McLaughlin Tonight
Catch up on the daily, and come out to Immanuel tonight for a special talk from Rebecca McLaughlin!
“Though He was in the form of God, [Jesus] did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6-7).
It is astonishing that the eternal Son of God would lay aside his entitlement to be served to become a servant. In all of human history, it’s always the lesser who serves the greater, but in the incarnation, we see the opposite. The infinite King of the universe humbled Himself, taking on human flesh, and chose to serve rather than to be served. Willingly, He took the form of a servant, not to gain anything for Himself (who can add anything to the eternal Son of God?), but to give everything for us. In His humility, He associated with the lowly, He took on the least privileged role in society, and He became the “nobody” in the eyes of the world. This is the pattern of servanthood that Jesus models for us, and it’s the same mindset we have in Christ.
We often struggle to serve others because we hold tightly to our rights and privileges. So often, our sense of “self” is wrapped up in the honor we get from others. We seek recognition and validation from others. But Jesus came to set us free from the tyranny of seeking a name for ourselves. In our place, he bore the judgment that we rightly deserve so that we could receive the acceptance that he rightly deserves.
Today we are asking for the humility of Christ to shape our hearts, laying aside our rights and recognition to serve others for God’s glory. May we consider Jesus, who, for our sake, became the ultimate servant.
