The Daily + This Sunday at Immanuel
Good morning! The Lord is indeed marvelous and His love is everlasting!
“And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done." And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground” (Luke 22: 41-44).
"I Stand Amazed" was written by Charles H Gabriel, a self-taught and prolific musician, song leader, and composer. In Verse 2 of the song, Gabriel paints a picture referencing Luke 22:41-44: "For me, it was in the garden, He prayed, 'Not my will but thine.' He had no tears for his own grief but sweat drops of blood for mine."
This particular arrangement holds a special significance for us here at Immanuel. In the Spring of 2020, several members of the Immanuel Worship team traveled to Cedarville, Ohio, for what was expected to be a few exceptional days of ministry. Little did we know that it would be the last time we, along with most people in the world, would be together for many months due to the pandemic. As the unexpected news of the campus closing reached the students, we found comfort in the fact that the Lord had already provided us with the songs we needed for that day, including this one.
I vividly remember the powerful and heartfelt singing of this song as we sought guidance from the Lord during a time of turmoil and confusion. Our voices rang out with exuberance and confidence in His marvelous love. It was a moment of worship that will stay with me forever (you can watch it here!). There are particulars to the board mix from that day that are especially significant to the way we play this song now, particularly how the sound engineer had the organ volume turned up to an extraordinarily loud level.
My friend, no matter what challenges you're facing today, take joy in the truth that the Lord's love is truly marvelous and reaches beyond the heavens!
