The Daily + Tonight + 60 Days of Prayer
Good morning, Immanuel. Let's take a moment to reflect on God's goodness and catch up on the latest updates!
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).
2024 was the year of the total solar eclipse. On April 8, the phenomenon was visible from parts of North and Central America, as well as the South Pacific Ocean. Here in Nashville, a few friends and I were determined to photograph this event despite the cloudy skies forecast. We set up our cameras, hoping to catch a glimpse, knowing that this sight would last only a few minutes at best. Dozens of others around us had the same idea and waited with special eye protection, hoping to witness the event.
There is something amazing about the created world around us, and the Bible tells us why. Creation is a witness to God’s glory. Every day, it “pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge” (Psa. 19:2). Creation is a kind of preacher and the topic of the preaching points beyond itself to the glory of God!
Why, then, do so many people “hear” another sermon from creation? How can a weekend in the Grand Canyon move one person to worship God and leave another person completely unaffected? This has everything to do with how we see, not just what we see. Apart from the grace of God, we can’t rightly perceive the deeper reality lying in plain sight (Romans 1:20). But when, through the gospel, God opens our eyes to see the glory of Jesus, we can finally see what’s been there the entire time - the glory of God. How we see Jesus changes how we see everything else. As we see him rightly, we can’t help but see the signposts of his glory in all of creation. To the redeemed of the Lord, creation can point us to the King of Glory who loves us and who wields His power for His glory and good.
The heavens declare the glory of God. May every moment today move us into greater awareness of God and His love for us in Christ!
