“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).
Who better than Jesus could speak these words to His disciples? Who greater than Redemption’s King is more fit to comfort us with these words? Who, lower than the Lamb, is more qualified to declare His faithfulness to the end? Friends are many, and great friends are fewer, but only the Friend of Sinners has a sinless life to offer and freely lays it down for the sake of the ungodly. His friendship is life to us! The 19th-century Scottish churchman Horatius Bonar once wrote—
“In His favour is life;” and to be without this favour is to be unhappy here, and to be shut out from joy hereafter. There is no life worthy of the name of life save that which flows from His assured friendship. Without that friendship, our life here is a burden and a weariness; but with that friendship we fear no evil, and all sorrow is turned into joy.
May the Spirit of the risen Christ awaken our hearts to receive the joy of friendship with Jesus through faith in the gospel!
