The Gaze of Our Hearts (+ James This Sunday!)
With every loving look at the gospel, we are made more like Jesus.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Everyone worships something. And all worshipers are made into the image of the thing they worship. That’s why the Psalmist says, speaking of idols, “Those who make them become like them, so do all who trust in them” (Psalm 135:18).
One of the primary ways we worship is with our gaze. Not necessarily our physical eyeballs, but the gaze of our hearts. Where have we directed our attention and our love? Paul teaches us in 2 Corinthians 3 that as we gaze at the glory of the Lord, we are “being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another.”
The glory of the Lord is most clearly displayed in the person of Jesus Christ and the good news of his death and resurrection. God promises us in this passage that with every loving look at the gospel, we are made more like Jesus.
Friends, let us take a good, long look at the gospel of Jesus Christ today! Nothing could be more powerful or transformative. As we gaze at the glory of the Lord, the Spirit of God is at work in us. Jesus will become even more beautiful to us, and we will become more like Jesus. What do we have to lose?
