The God Who Satisfies Us
Good morning Immanuel. God is even more satisfying than “rich food”, and he gives himself freely to us!
“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1)”
For the past six weeks, our Immanuel iKids Director, Taylor Cheek, has been teaching our Kids Discipleship Groups the spiritual discipline of fasting adapted from her work in The Gospel Project For Kids Leader Bible Study (Lifeway). You are also invited to join her and others for Zoom prayer meetings today at noon as we pray for the children of Immanuel.
The psalmists frequently describe waiting for God as thirsting in a drought condition. (Ps. 63:1) Do you know what that feels like? Can we understand what a deep longing for God actually feels like if we have not even experienced the metaphor? As our bodies long for food and drink in fasting, our souls learn to long for satisfaction in God. So do not fear the discomfort of fasting. The very discomfort can teach you what it means to “hunger and thirst for righteousness,” and the promise of Scripture is that you “will be filled” (Matt. 5:6). Fasting is a physical reminder that God is even more satisfying than “rich food” (Ps. 63:5).
