“The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved” (Psalm 93:1).
Our clothes communicate something. When I was growing up I wasn’t allowed to wear jeans to church or a hat at the dinner table because those were considered inappropriate for the occasion. Certain restaurants–that I do not frequent–require men to wear jackets and ties, and nearly all restaurants require shirts and shoes. A general’s stars or a sergeant’s stripes speak of position. We talk about power suits or swim trunks, outerwear, or athleisure (a questionable but effective portmanteau).
So when Psalm 93 tells us that God is robed in majesty and has put on strength as his belt, we can’t picture it since God is spirit, but we get it. His attire is glory and splendor. He is ensconced in the finest fabrics of perfect power. And his royal robes are girded by strength.
While other leaders dress for the authority they would like to portray, God is wrapped in who he is. While a president, a general, or a CEO might be caught by the paparazzi in an embarrassing bathrobe or ratty t-shirt, God is majesty and strength every moment of every day for all eternity. He is never not glorious. He is never compromised, diminished, or undignified. Today, let’s remember and meditate on the majestic sartorial sense of our great God.
