The Soul's Anchor
Good morning Immanuel. Our soul’s anchor is not tied to earthly things that pass away.
“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:19-20)
About ten years ago, a family member took me on a boat trip on a river in Washington state. The boat was small and easily affected by the current. After a few hours of sputtering around and not catching anything, we decided to call it quits and make our way back to the banks. As we neared the banks, I figured we were close enough for me to jump out and make it to shore, but I overestimated my ability to jump and underestimated the boat’s tendency to drift. I came to this realization mid-air as the force of my jump pushed the boat further away, and I plunged into neck-deep water. It would have been nice to have an anchor.
The human heart is a bit like that boat. We are prone to drift. We overestimate our strength and then underestimate the spiritual forces waging war against us. But the good news of our life in Christ is that we have an anchor of the soul. And this anchor is sure and steadfast. Our willpower is not always sure and steadfast. Our motivation is not sure and steadfast. But just as a strong anchor keeps a storm-tossed boat from drifting away, a sure and steadfast anchor keeps the storm-tossed soul from drifting away. But our soul’s anchor is greater in every way. This anchor does not sink downward, nor is it tied to earthly things that pass away. This anchor rises to heaven itself— even to the very presence of God, where Christ has gone on our behalf! There is no place more secure than the love of God in Christ, our risen Savior. At the Father’s right hand are mercy, pardon, security, and acceptance in Christ. Our hope is alive, and He will hold this storm-tossed soul fast!
