“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)
Notice the gentle way that Jesus deals with his failing friends. In verse 41, he says, “the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” The notes of mercy are unmistakable in the voice of love as if he had said, “You want to obey, you want to participate with me, but the flesh is weak. I know. I feel it too. You don't have the strength to do what you will, so I will be strong for you.” That is the heart of the gospel. And what a wonderful mind-blowing doctrine is the incarnation of the son of God. God knows human frailty from the inside. You won't find that in the other world religions. Never in our wildest dreams would we imagine it. But the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob puts on our weakness and enters into our human frailty in order to redeem us from the inside. God be praised!
