The Unchained Gospel

Good morning, Immanuel. We can find the strength to keep pressing on, no matter what, because the gospel is not subject to the limitations we find in ourselves.

“Remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, the offspring of David, as preached in my gospel, for which I am suffering, bound with chains as a criminal. But the word of God is not bound!” (2 Timothy 2:8-9).

Because of the gospel, Paul was locked away in a Roman prison. He has no freedom to move about. But the word of God, the gospel, is not bound. He’s hindered by virtue of chains, but no chain can hinder the power of the gospel! You can lock a man up and throw out the keys. You could even kill a man for preaching the gospel. But there is no power in hell, no scheme of man, able to restrain the power of the gospel word! It is able to soften the hardest of hearts, rescue the most hopeless of souls, heal the wounded of sufferers, reconcile the greatest of enemies, and save the worst of sinners. The word of God is not bound but as free to work as the risen Christ is alive and well. 

That was Paul’s hope. Not how great a preacher he was or how ideal his circumstances were. His hope for the success of the mission was found in the very gospel he preached. We can find the strength to keep pressing on, no matter what, because the gospel is not subject to the limitations we find in ourselves.
