“…but you are the same, and your years have no end.” (Psalm 102:27).
A person who does not change over time is a problem. It means they never grow. They never improve. They never mature.
On the other hand, we value steadiness and reliability in those around us. We want to be able to count on them. We want what was good and true about them yesterday to be good and true today.
In God, all is good and true. He has no growing or maturing or improving to do. So when this great hymn says that in him “there is no shadow of turning” and “thou changest not” it is a promise of perfect reliability, perfect foundation for trust. It is God’s very goodness that never changes or dissipates. We need not worry that the love he promised yesterday will be lesser today, that the plan he has for us will be disregarded or discarded, that his accomplishments through Christ will run out of effectiveness.
If you or I fail to change, we become ungodly. When God doesn’t change, he proves his perfect deity for our good and gives us every reason for faith, hope, and peace in him.
Great is thy faithfulness, O God, my Father;
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not;
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.
