The Wideness of God's Mercy
Is there any sin, sorrow, or struggle too great for the mercy of God in Christ?
“It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth” (Is. 49:6).
“There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” is a song we sang together recently, and it articulates the abundance of God’s kindness with such beauty.
There's a wideness in God's mercy
Like the wideness of the sea
There's a kindness in His justice
Which is more than libertyFor the love of God is broader
Than the measure of a man's mind
And the heart of the Eternal
Is most wonderfully kind
Every believer owes their salvation to the wideness of God’s mercy, the broadness of his love. Passages like Isaiah 49:6 remind us of this wideness. From cover to cover in our Bible, God has signaled his intention to bring salvation to the end of the earth. His mercy is as vast as his heart, and the plan of salvation reaches Jews, non-Jews, men, women, those near and those far off. There is a wideness to God’s mercy that invites us to rest our full weight on him. Is there any sin, sorrow, or struggle too great for the mercy of God in Christ? Is there any distance so far his mercy cannot reach? Is there any pit so deep that our Savior cannot reach down with loving hands and retrieve us? There is a wideness in God’s mercy!
