Throne of Grace + Monday Memo!
Good morning Immanuel. Today is a great day to draw near to God on terms of grace.
"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." (Hebrews 4:16)
We have the most generous welcome in the gospel to draw near to God confidently. What a thought! The ancient High Priests could draw near to God only once a year after an elaborate system of purification. Even then, the High Priest would never draw near with confidence because he himself was a sinner in the presence of a Holy God. But here, even the lowliest believer is welcome to draw near to God confidently! And how so? Because the throne we are invited to approach is a throne of grace!
Why a throne of grace? We are weak and sinful, so a throne of pure majesty would terrify us; a throne of pure justice would condemn us, and a throne of pure power would slay us! But a throne of grace best describes the kindness and mercy of God's heart towards us in Christ. In Jesus, all of God's power, goodness, holiness, majesty, and justice come together for our advantage instead of our destruction! In Christ, the fullness of God is smiling at us! We could imagine a god sitting on a throne of power, majesty, or justice, but we would never run toward a god like that. But in Christ, the threat of rejection, judgment, and death are taken away because He was rejected, judged, and crucified at the cross on our behalf. Now, from heaven, the Risen Christ rules His people from the throne of grace. Every ounce of His divine might, power, sovereignty, and majesty is for us. No corner of God's heart will be less than merciful and gracious towards you. So, let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
