To Whom Shall We Go?
We don’t follow Jesus because life is simple. We follow Jesus because nothing else can save us.
“Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life’” (John 6:68).
When the crowd walked away, Jesus turned to the twelve and asked, “Do you want to go away as well?” It was a searching question. A question for every disciple who feels the pull to quit. And Peter answered for all who know the truth: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
That is not the voice of despair. That is the voice of clarity. Peter didn’t stay because things were easy; he stayed because there was nowhere else to go. Christ was not the backup plan in case something else worked out. He was not the trial run before a better option came along. Jesus was the bread of life. His words were spirit and life. It was Christ or collapse. And that’s still true today.
We don’t follow Jesus because life is simple. We follow Jesus because nothing else can save us. Every other hope will eventually let us down. Every other savior will fall short. Every other promise runs dry. But Jesus remains. His grace is sufficient, his Word is life, and his mercy endures. Some days, it takes everything in us to say it. Some days, we say it through tears. Life can leave us confused, exhausted, and undone. But even through the sorrow, those who have tasted His grace can still say, “To whom shall we go?”
There is love like the love of Christ, and he is not one option among many—he is the only hope that never lets us down. And those who have come to know him can say with certainty that Christ is not just enough. Christ is all!
This post brought this hymn to mind:
All to Jesus I surrender,
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
I surrender all,
I surrender all.
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
