Unresting, Unhasting (+ This Sunday at Immanuel)
Only God can rightly be described as both “unresting” and “unhasting.”
“Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:4).
“But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day” (2 Peter 3:8).
Unresting unhasting
And silent as light
Nor wanting nor wasting
Thou rulest in might
- Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Only God can rightly be described as “unresting, unhasting.” When you or I fail to rest, we tend to become frantic and manic and unhealthy . . . then collapse. Our lack of rest leads to haste–worrying, rushing, pushing. And our haste leads to a need for rest. But God doesn’t suffer from our limitations.
God needs no rest because he is all-powerful.
God is never in a hurry because he invented the very concept of time.
God never rests because he is perpetually sustaining every aspect of creation.
God never hurries because he has sovereignly laid out the fabric of history from beginning to end.
This means that you and I can rest and we need not become frantic in our haste. Our Father is upholding, empowering, protecting, sustaining, and ordaining. He rules in might, so we can entrust those things to him that exhaust us and worry us most, big or small.
