What It Means To Bless God
Good morning Immanuel! Yesterday, we saw that God is supremely blessable. Today, we see what it means to bless God.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 1:3).
What does it mean to bless God? We obviously can’t give God anything he doesn’t already have. Blessing him isn’t adding to him in any way, or topping up his self-esteem. God in himself lacks nothing—he is sufficient and complete.
To bless God is to praise him. The kind of blessing Paul calls for here is frequently heard throughout the Bible. Here are just three quick examples:
“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant” (Gen. 9:26).
Jethro said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of Pharaoh and has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians” (Ex. 18:10).
“The Lord lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be the God of my salvation” (Ps. 18:46).
It’s not about what God lacks, but what he deserves. In Psalm 18, “blessed” is paired with “exalted”—both go together. To bless God is to praise him.
