Who Are You?
Good morning, Immanuel. Knowing our identity in Christ empowers us to reject the lies that threaten to destabilize our joy.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are” (1 John 3:1).
I remember once watching a television segment where an elderly African American man was interviewed about his experiences with racism growing up. When asked if racial insults offended him, he surprised everyone by responding, "No!" His reasoning? In summary, "It's not what they call you, but what you answer to!" Knowing his identity empowered him to dismiss every insult as an affront to his God-given dignity.
The same is true for every believer: knowing our identity in Christ empowers us to reject every fiery dart of Satan as an affront to our God-given dignity. Who are we in Christ? 1 John 3:1 tells us: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” The Father has loved us into a new kind of existence - as children of God. Let that sink in. We are the beloved children of the Father! Recognizing our identity now empowers us to refute every accusation the devil or even our own heart makes against us.
Therefore, it's not the accusations of my guilt that have the final say; it's what God calls me. In Christ, I am called a forgiven child of God. It's not the feelings of my heart that have the final say; it's what God calls me. In Christ, I am called a beloved child of God. It's not what the enemy proclaims that has the final say; it's what God calls me. In Christ, I am called a righteous child of God. Praise be to God!
