Why Are You Afraid?
Jesus didn’t tell his disciples the storm wasn’t overwhelming. He showed them that he was greater than the storm.
“And he said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” Then he rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm” (Matthew 8:26).
Your heart may be unsettled today. You may be anxious, afraid, or angry. Life gives us many reasons to feel this way, after all. Just as the disciples clung to ropes and seats and gunwales, we grasp at anything that might offer some stability, only to realize the storms of life are tossing those things as well.
So today, let Jesus interrogate your heart. “Why are you afraid?”
I’m sure that question seemed silly to the disciples in the boat. I suspect they gestured in every general direction with a look on their faces that said, “Seriously?” And we’re tempted to do the same. For real, Jesus? Why am I afraid? Look around.
Friends, Jesus didn’t tell his disciples the storm wasn’t overwhelming. He told and showed them that he was greater than the storm. So again, why are you afraid? Why are you afraid when Jesus himself has promised to never leave you or forsake you? Why are you afraid when the Lord over sea and storm and all creation is with you? Why are you afraid when the one who has conquered is with you? In Jesus, we have every reason for peace, for confidence, for great calm.
So helpful, Barnabas!!
“Your heart may be unsettled today. You may be anxious, afraid, or angry. Life gives us many reasons to feel this way, after all.”
