With God, Our Weakness is No Disadvantage
Good morning, Immanuel. With God, our weakness is no disadvantage! So, let’s give the Lord our all and stay low before him.
“Then the people of Israel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord raised up for them a deliverer, Ehud, the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, a left-handed man. The people of Israel sent tribute by him to Eglon the king of Moab…And Ehud reached with his left hand, took the sword from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly” (Judges 3:15;21).
The book of Judges has some of the most colorful stories of rebellion and rescue, like the story of Ehud, one of Israel’s judges. Picture this: Israel does what’s evil in the Lord’s sight, so the Lord raises up the king of Moab as judgment. Israel cries out for help, and God answers with the most unexpected deliverance.
Enter Ehud, a left-handed man. Back then, being left-handed wasn’t an advantage. In some Mesopotamian cultures, it was seen as a curse, and ancient Egyptians sometimes depicted their enemies as left-handed. The point of this left-handed detail in Judges 3 is to remind us that, from the culture’s standard, Ehud was not the deliverance anyone would have expected. Because he was left-handed the guards never thought to check for a sword on his right side (where a lefty would stash a sword). His weakness to the world turned out to be God’s strategy for victory!
We have a Savior in Jesus, who through weakness, turned the world upside down. The cross looked like mere weakness and folly, but it is the power and wisdom of God. Here’s what that means for us: In Christ, our weakness in the world is no disadvantage with God. Dear Immanuel, we may feel out of our depth as we pray for a long-term home in Nashville, but take heart, his power is made perfect in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). With God, our weakness is no disadvantage! So, let’s give the Lord our all and stay low before him.
